Horizon North Workers at Attachie Lodge Vote in Favour of Strike Action
Fort St. John, BC – Camp hospitality workers at Attachie Lodge who serve workforce crews of oil and natural gas projects in Northern BC have voted 100% in favour of strike action. The workers are represented by BC’s hospitality union, UNITE HERE Local 40.
The 31 camp culinary, housekeeping, and janitorial workers are employed by Horizon North Camp Services, a division of Dexterra Group. Workers joined Local 40 last year in October over concerns about wages and working conditions. They started bargaining this January demanding better wages, safe workloads, travel pay, and improved benefits.
“We are the frontline for Horizon North, we treat all the guests with respect and go out of our way to make them comfortable and safe in our camp. We expect the same from Horizon North: no more minimum wage, no more travel without fair compensation, no more inflated workloads. We can’t let corporations treat staff like they’re disposable”, said Rozelle Morris, a housekeeper at Attachie Lodge.
Situated northeast of Fort St. John, in the core of British Columbia’s Montney resource region, Attachie Lodge provides accommodations for workers at ARC Resources’ oil and natural gas operations in the area.
This is the second campsite where Horizon North workers have voted in favour of job action. Last week, workers at Kobes Creek Lodge, another camp serving oil and gas crews outside of Fort St. John, may strike over wages and working conditions.
UNITE HERE Local 40 represents approximately 1,000 camp hospitality workers and recently negotiated new contracts at Red Chris Mine and Cedar Valley Lodge that continue to raise standards for workers in the sector.
